College Football Chaos: NCAA Upsets, Cubs Slump, and Bears’ Season Preview: Episode 4

🏈 Blog Post: College Football Chaos, Cubs Concerns, and Bears Beginnings

The start of the NCAA football season brought pure chaos and plenty of surprises. Week one showed us exactly why preseason rankings can be so unreliable. Writers and analysts seemed to get it completely wrong as several top-ranked teams were upset, causing a massive shake-up across the board.

Texas, ranked number one despite finishing last season behind Ohio State, struggled right out of the gate. Meanwhile, Ohio State, ranked third, came out strong—proving that preseason polls mean little once the games begin. From Iowa State’s victory over Kansas State to South Florida stunning Boise State, the upsets kept rolling. LSU toppled Clemson, and Florida State dominated Alabama, leaving fans and analysts alike scrambling to make sense of it all.

The problem with the ranking system is nothing new. The NCAA still hasn’t figured out how to structure its playoff system fairly. Unlike the NFL or MLB, which have clear divisions and playoff criteria, college football’s system relies too heavily on opinions and preseason assumptions. Every year, it feels like history repeats itself—with powerhouses staying on top simply because of their names. But fans want parity. We want the underdogs to win. We want excitement, not predictability.

And then there’s the NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) issue. What was meant to be a way for players to earn fair compensation has turned into a bidding war. Athletes jump from team to team, chasing the biggest offer, and loyalty to schools seems to have vanished. The transfer portal has turned into free agency, and while it’s great to see players get paid, the system is clearly broken.

⚾ The Chicago Cubs’ Struggles

Turning to Major League Baseball, the Chicago Cubs have been showing signs of frustration and inconsistency. Much of their slump seems to trace back to Kyle Tucker’s hand injury. Even though Tucker tried to play through the pain, the lingering effects impacted his swing, and that’s had a ripple effect throughout the team.

The Cubs brought in Carlos Santana and Aaron Civale to bolster the lineup and pitching, but the chemistry just hasn’t clicked. The Brewers have overtaken them in the National League Central, and now the Cubs find themselves fighting for a Wild Card spot—a position they weren’t built for. September is crunch time, and it’s clear this team needs a spark if they want to make a real playoff push.

🐻 The Chicago Bears’ Roster Moves

On the NFL side, the Chicago Bears are finalizing their roster and making key adjustments. With players like Scott Daly and Duvernay being released and then re-signed, the roster shuffle continues. The offensive line remains a critical focus, and while there are promising players like Kiran Amagaji and Theo Benedett, depth remains a concern.

The Bears’ biggest test comes soon as they prepare to open the season against the Minnesota Vikings. All eyes will be on Caleb Williams to see if he can take that next step and prove himself as the franchise quarterback. While rumors swirled about big-name free agents like Micah Parsons, the Bears seem to be taking a more measured approach with their cap space.
